Artifacts

The artifacts are arranged by geographical region to make it easier to find examples from a particular area. All artifacts are guaranteed genuine and none are illegally smuggled from their country of origin to the best of my knowledge. The artifacts in which I deal are generally those everyday items which average middle class or lower individuals would have used. They are every bit as interesting and generally more affordable for most of us. Measurements on most objects are in millimeters (mm) or centimeters (cm). To convert to inches, figure about 24mm or 2.4cm per inch.

Egyptian Artifacts

Amulets

A27. Egypt, Late Period, ca 1085-332 BC, Faience Papyrus Sceptre (Wadj) on Plaque. A composition plaque depicting a papyrus sceptre (wadj), 24mm long by 11mm wide, cream colored but probably originally glazed (now oxidized), intact with no chipping and only modest wear and in Good condition....$125 Photo

A29. Egypt, Late Period, ca 1085-332 BC, Faience Amulet of THOTH. A light blue faience amulet of a standing Thoth, 31mm tall, holed in the back for stringing, stylized features, intact, CHOICE condition....$175 Photo
Thoth was the god of writing and knowledge, depicted as either a baboon or a sacred ibis.

A30. Egypt, Late Period, ca 1085-332 BC, Faience Amulet of TAWARET/THOERIS. A light blue faience amulet of a standing hippopotamus god Tawaret/Thoeris, 15mm tall, holed in the back for stringing, intact, CHOICE condition....SOLD Photo
Tawaret/Thoeris was a household deity in the form of a hippopotamus who was particularly associated with the protection of women in childbirth, with her pendulous breasts and full belly conveying the idea of pregnancy. Essentially a benevolent figure, Tawaret is widely represented on amulets and because of her protective powers during childbirth, is often depicted on beds and headrests. The male hippo was regarded as a destructive animal and associated with the evil god Seth.

Anubis was the canine god of the dead, closely associated with embalming and mummification. The cult of Anubis was eventually associated with that of Osiris, the other primary god of the dead.

A32. Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca 320-30 BC, Faience Amulet of a Falcon, symbol of HORUS. A green faience amulet of a falcon, symbol for Horus, 12mm tall, holed in the back for stringing, originally seems to have had a head-dress which is now broken off, otherwise intact, GOOD condition....$95 Photo

A34. Egypt, Late Period, ca 1085-332 BC, Steatite Heart Amulet. Carved of cream and tan colored steatite, 26mm long, intact and in CHOICE condition....$150 PhotoThe heart was considered by the Egyptians to be the most important organ, for to them it was the seat of knowledge and intelligence, hence the weighing of the heart by the gods of the underworld upon death, for only it retained the memory of the owner's deeds on earth. These were placed in and on the mummy wrappings and became one of the most important amulets from sometime in the New Kingdom until the end of the pharaonic period.

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period - Late Period, ca 1085-332 BC, double-sided pataikos amulet of a dwarf god (sometimes identified as Ptah-Seker) with the same figure depicted each side, glazed composition of a light olive green color, features fairly clear and generally distinct, holed through the upper middle for suspension, 17mm tall, these were popular as protective amulets, intact and in SUPERB condition....$175 Photo

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period - Late Period, ca 1085-332 BC, double-sided Pataikos amulet of a dwarf god (sometimes identified as Ptah-Seker) with Janus-like head showing the bearded dwarf god Bes on the back side, glazed composition of a light olive green color, features fairly clear and generally distinct, holed in the back for suspension, 36mm tall, both of these gods were popular as protective amulets, intact and in SUPERB condition....$275 Photo

A33. Egypt, 20th Dynasty, ca 1200-1085 BC, Bundle-backed Seal. Frit composition bundle-backed seal of cream color (probably glazed originally but now oxidized and worn off), slight hints of green apparent, heiroglyphs on the base, approximately 20mm in length, Rowe 84-85var. Egypt, Second Intermediate Period, Hyksos, ca 1674-1567 BC, Steatite Scarab. 17mm long by 12mm wide, pattern consisting of 6 sets of concentric circles, a small lotus near edge between 2 circles spaced farther apart, nfr (good, beautiful) in center, an amuletic ('good luck charm') type of scarab, very very minor chipping, intact, CHOICE condition....$175 Photo

A48. Egypt, 26th Dynasty, ca 665-525 BC, Green Faience Funerary Scarab. Scarab beetle back with suspension loop on base, Petrie 92d. 12mm long, intact and fully glazed except for one very minor spot where it is chipped off, these were woven into the shroud casings of mummies in later Egyptian dynasties for amuletic purposes, CHOICE condition and SCARCE....$100 Photo

A191. Central Asia, ca 3rd-2nd Millennium BC, a group of large Fibulae of straight design with decorative tops in the shape of poppy seed heads:
C. 146mm long, decorated with 2 incised 'V' shapes and 4 incised rings above which are 3 protruding knobs, above that is a large bulbous section with 3 small projections each divided into 3 sections and incised crescents beneath to form sepals, at the top is a large conical knob. This whole assembly resembles the seed head of a mature poppy. Green patina with slight earthen cover, SUPERB condition....$235 Photo
D. 189mm long, somewhat more stylized and of slimmer and lighter design than the previous 3 examples, but with the same basic poppy motif, 3 protruding knobs surmounted by the bulbous area with 3 sepals and 3 projections topped by a conical knob, slightly rough green patina, intact and SUPERB condition....$175 Photo

Bactria, ca 3rd -1st Century BC, Bronze 'Perfume' Vial with humped bull-shaped stopper, approximately 93mm tall with stopper in place, 3 legs attached to bulbous base, midsection decorated with a single circular rib, the top has a small rim, the stopper is surmounted by a stylized humped bull (zebu); exactly what was stored in these vials is uncertain but it was probably something like perfumes or cosmetics; brown and green patina with earthen cover, intact and very nice, seldom offered, SUPERB condition....$425 Reduced to $350 Photo

A198. Central Asia, Late Bronze Age, ca 17500-1500 BC, Bronze 2-headed pendant with 2 rams, 57mm long by 27mm tall, loop in center for wearing, dark green patina with slight earthen cover in crevices, attractive, intact and SUPERB condition....$395 Photo

A199. Scythian Central Asia, ca 2nd-early 1st Millennium BC, Bronze Axehead, 118mm long, rounded front and bilaterally flattened, hollow with thick heavy walls, the back end terminates in 4 long V-shaped projections which I believe were crimped down over the wooden shaft for securing the head to the shaft, there is also a hole for a pin inserted near the back end for securing the shaft, light brown patina overlaid by a thin slightly crystalline green patina, most of one rear prong and the tip of another broken off, otherwise intact; as far as I can determine, this is apparently unpublished and possibly a new type, RARE, CHOICE condition....SOLD Photo

These bowls were used in ancient Mesopotamia by Jews, Christians and Muslims (this one obviously Jewish), and were placed upside down in the house in order to trap devils or demons, preventing them from harming family members.

The artist has used an egg and dot pattern (favored by Gnathian artists) around the rim, the back is decorated with incisions which function as vines for small white flowers, the front is decorated in a red vine with red and yellow clusters of grapes and 2 flowers similar to daisies, the base and foot are glazed in part creating an interesting contrast, these cups were used as drinking vessels as well as tomb goods for South Italian Greeks, intact and exceptionally well preserved....$895 Photo

Personal Items

Rings
As long as they are not structurally flawed many of the rings I have are wearable with the caveat that you treat them gently and don't wear them while bathing, doing dishes or washing your hands or when working with other chemicals. They should also not be worn all the time. The chemicals can harm the patina causing eventual degradation of the ring and bronze or silver often become at least somewhat crystallized from their stay in the ground and can have unseen internal fractures that will cause them to break if handled roughly.

Fibulae/Brooches (Toga Pins)
Many fibulae/brooches of this time and type had iron pins which, because iron preserves poorly in soil, have deteriorated and are now missing. While having an iron pin intact on a fibula is rare and will increase the value of an otherwise average piece, not having one does not greatly diminish the value of an otherwise nice piece since that is the norm for these.

A590. Roman Mesopotamia, ca 1st-2nd Century AD, terracotta seal impressions (Bullae); these seals were used on papyrus temple documents, about 0.75 - 1 inch across with various motifs including Herakles head, other gods and goddesses, the Dioscuroi, heads of emperors or empresses(?), etc. Made of red and/or black clay, many with striations on the back showing the fibers of the papyrus. I am not sure what material was used to make this item. The person from whom I purchased it said it was bone, but the structure of the underlying material does not look like any bone I have ever seen. It seems to be a grey composite material similar to stone but is lightweight. The light brown color is only on the surface and is probably painted or stained onto the surface.
