This page contains coins of the Holy Land, primarily those of the Hasmonean Kingdom, the Herodian rulers, the Roman procurators, and city coins of the area. I will also be listing coins of other areas that have a biblical connection, such as Persian sigloi, Tyrian shekels, and Tribute pennies, which will also be found on other pages. Most will be referenced by Hendin numbers(H-). Happy Hunting.

Hasmonean Coins

SP101. Widow's mite. The so-called Widow's mite is one of the most popular ancient coins - not because of it's great beauty as a coin, but because of what it represents. When Christ was seated in the temple with his disciples, they observed how the rich made a show of their wealth and 'generosity'. In the midst of this show, a lowly widow deposited two small coins in the offering box, coins the King James version (Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-2) calls a mite. These were the smallest coins in circulation at the time. Christ uses the occasion to let the disciples (and us) know that God looks on the heart of the giver and not the amount given as He says that this widow has given more than all the rest as she has given all that she had in her poverty, while the others had given a small part of their abundance. Two 'mites' (Hebrew = prutah; Greek = lepton) in first century Judea would buy one pomegranate. It probably took between 65 and 70 to equal a days wages for a laborer (one denarius/drachma). There are several types that could have been used by the poor widow as several types were in curculation at the time. The most common types found in hoards are those of the Hasmonean (Maccabean) rulers. These have an anchor with a Greek legend surrounding which translates 'of King Alexander' on the obverse and an 8-rayed star within a diadem on the reverse. These coins were generally crude when made; however the ones offered here will have reasonably decent centering (these are generally off-center) and are clear on at least one side, with the other side recognizable, and will grade at least a nice Fine or slightly better(For other design types see below.)....$20
SP102.Others of the same type, but nicer with better centering and clearer design....$35 each
(These make great unique gifts for that person who has most everything or for a pastor or Sunday School teacher.) For nicer examples priced individually see below under Alexander Jannaeus, JB112 and JB115, among others.

Alexander Jannaeus was the great-nephew of Simon and Judah Maccabee and became ruler of the Jews in 103 BC upon the death of his brother Judah Aristobolus I. Not only did he become high priest, he assumed the title “king” as well, and for the first time the ruler of the Jews had equal rank with rulers of the Hellenistic world.
The young king was an ambitious warrior, hungry for conquest, and his reign was prosperous, if bloody. Early in his rule he gained control of the entire coast of Palestine, from Mount Carmel in the north to Egypt in the south, with the exception of Ascalon, which escaped his armies due to the city’s strong ties with Ptolemaic Egypt. Jannaeus’s kingdom was roughly the same size as that ruled by King David.
The second decade of Jannaeus’s reign was fraught with internal strife in Judea. Jannaeus had surrounded himself with opulence and grandeur. His Hellenization and militarism deeply disturbed many of his countrymen, particularly the Pharisees, who devoutly believed the laws of the Torah had to be carefully obeyed and thought Jannaeus was neglecting his sacred duties. In short, they didn’t want a Hellenized warrior - and one who obviously enjoyed the role - as high priest.
On one occasion his enemies embarrassed Jannaeus by pelting him with fruit while he officiated over the Feast of the Tabernacles in the Temple. The king retaliated by having several hundred of the rebels killed. Civil war raged in Judea for six years between the Pharisee and Sadducee factions beginning about 95BC and some 50,000 Jews perished, according to some accounts.
The opposition among the king’s own people encouraged his enemies. In 89BC, Demetrios III of Syria attempted to invade Judea and defeated Jannaeus near Shechem (Neapolis). This setback, however, reunited the Jews somewhat and the renewed unity gave them the power to drive Demetrios out of Palestine.
Toward the end of his reign, Josephus reports, Jannaeus became ill from heavy drinking, which ultimately led to his death. But before the king died he was apparently involved in something of a reconciliation with the Pharisees.
