Diocletian distinguished himself more as a statesman and reformer than a soldier, something the empire sorely needed at that time. One of those reforms was the currency, and from his reign onwards the denominations will change. He also realized the empire was too vast for one man to rule and instituted the sharing of imperial power, which lasted until Constantine became sole emperor in 324.

Carausius was a general under Maximianus and was given the job of ridding the waterways of the Frankish and Saxon pirates. He soon became a pirate and took over the province of Britain, eventually extending into Gaul. He successfully repelled all attempts by the Empire to expell him until he was killed by his successor Allectus. Allectus was not nearly so able as Carausius and was routed by Constantius, under Diocletian, bringing Britain back into the Empire in AD 296.

This image of the mile fort, or campgate as we commonly call it, becomes very common on Constantinian AEs. Interestingly, the beacons in this example appear to be lit with smoke or fire arising from each one. |

ROMAN SPECIAL 1 Silver Coins of the Roman Empire. I have recently acquired a group of silver coins from the glory days of the Roman Empire. Most of these date to the 1st through 3rd Centuries AD. Most of the earlier ones grade about Very Fine range while later ones are generally Very Fine. Most are denarii but I do have a few nice antoniniani. These are much nicer than the previous batches and will go fast, so order soon. While they last....$50; 2 different for $90 Photo ROMAN SPECIAL 2 Late Roman Bronzes, ca AD260-400+. Coins of the later Roman emperors from Gallienus to Arcadius and Honorius and beyond, mostly Antoniniani, AE3 and AE4 size, but including an occassional cententionalis or follis now and then and grading FINE or better (no spectacular blazers or gems, just solid mid-grade coins). Great for beginning collectors with a small budget or for the younger ones who want to get as much variety as possible for their limited dollars. Also good for the dealer who wants to carry a few inexpensive coins. These are attributed as to ruler and reverse type and packaged in individual flips. I offer these while I can in lots of: 3 different....$15 10 different....$50
