Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus, born in 106BC, became one of Rome's most successful soldiers. He was made Imperator at the young age of 23 and in a campaign in Africa in 81BC he earned the surname Magnus. He pacified Spain ten years later and in 67BC he cleared the Mediterranean of pirates. In 57BC he joined with Crassus and Caesar to form the first triumvirate. He was made the head of the patricians and found himself opposing Caesar, who had joined the cause of the plebians and who defeated Pompey at Pharsalus. He fled to Egypt and was murdered upon landing there in 48BC. All coins featuring him were struck after his death by his sons. This coin was struck by Cnaeus Pompey, son of Pompey the Great, who went to Spain after his father's death to revive the spirit of the party.
